Apple sells two versions of the AirPods 5: a $129 model with a USB-C Charging Case and a $149 model with a Wireless Charging Case. Both earbuds include Active Noise Cancellation, the H2 chip, and the same open-ear design, but the extra $20 adds several useful conveniences.

The AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case are the better choice for most regular users. They offer longer listening time, swipe-based volume controls, wireless charging support, and more detailed Find My tracking. The standard model remains a sensible option for buyers with a strict budget or those who only need a secondary pair.

What both AirPods 5 models include

The two versions use identical earbuds, with the same dimensions and weight. Both have Apple’s redesigned acoustic architecture with updated Adaptive EQ, along with Transparency mode, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Personalized Spatial Audio.

They also support Voice Isolation, studio-quality audio recording, and IP57 dust, sweat, and water resistance. Live Translation is available when the earbuds are paired with a compatible iPhone that has Apple Intelligence enabled, subject to supported languages and regions.

Active Noise Cancellation is included on both models, so choosing the less expensive version does not mean giving up Apple’s main noise-control feature.

How the two models differ

  • Battery life: The standard AirPods 5 provide up to four hours with Active Noise Cancellation enabled, or up to six hours with noise control off. The Wireless Charging Case model lasts up to five hours with ANC enabled and up to seven hours with noise control off.
  • Case battery life: With ANC enabled, the standard case provides up to 20 hours of listening time, compared with up to 22 hours for the wireless-charging version.
  • Volume controls: The standard earbuds use a force sensor, while the higher-priced model adds swipe controls for adjusting volume.
  • Charging: The $129 model uses USB-C only. The $149 case also supports an Apple Watch charger and Qi-certified chargers.
  • Find My: The upgraded case supports Find My network tracking, separate locations for each earbud and the case, and individual Lost Mode support. It also includes a speaker for locating the case and hearing charging or battery-status sounds.

Apple lists the standard charging case at 32.3 grams and the Wireless Charging Case at 34.7 grams. The cases have the same dimensions, but they are not interchangeable. Buyers cannot purchase the standard model and add wireless charging later with the other case.

Which AirPods 5 should you buy?

For most people, the additional $20 is justified. Longer battery life helps during travel and extended listening sessions, while swipe controls make it easier to change volume without reaching for an iPhone or using Siri. Wireless charging is particularly convenient for anyone who already owns a Qi charger or Apple Watch charger.

The enhanced Find My features may be the strongest reason to choose the more expensive model. The network can help locate AirPods when they are beyond the connected device’s range, while separate locations and the case speaker can make misplaced earbuds easier to recover.

The standard AirPods 5 are still a good fit for short listening sessions, tight budgets, or use as a backup pair. They deliver the same audio technology, ANC, and water resistance, with the main compromises being shorter battery life, fewer controls, USB-C-only charging, and more limited tracking. Check current pricing before buying, since discounts can narrow or eliminate the normal $20 difference.
