Apple appears to be preparing a surround-sound feature that would let an Apple TV 4K connect to four HomePods, based on new clues found in Apple software. The proposed arrangement would place speakers at the front left, front right, rear left, and rear right of a room.

The functionality remains unannounced, and it is not yet clear whether it will work with existing Apple TV 4K models and HomePods or require new hardware. However, multiple software discoveries suggest Apple may be close to introducing the feature.

What the latest software clues show

Leaker pdfu found additional references to a four-speaker surround system in the third beta of audioOS 27.2, Apple's internal name for the HomePod operating system. One reference reportedly says that Siri can match a speaker to its surround system.

Separately, Aaron Perris found two new SF Symbols in the third beta of macOS 27.2. The symbols depict four speakers positioned in a room. Although their names do not explicitly mention HomePod, one appears to show a top-down arrangement of speakers, while another refers to four speakers being used in a home theater setup.

The appearance of those symbols alongside the audioOS references points toward a coordinated feature rather than a standalone interface change, although Apple has not confirmed the connection.

Will new HomePods be required?

Compatibility is one of the main unanswered questions. Pdfu previously said Apple had tested more than one hardware configuration, including four second-generation HomePods. Another setup reportedly combined two second-generation HomePods at the front with two unreleased speakers positioned at the rear.

That testing leaves open the possibility that the feature could support current HomePods, new speakers, or a combination of both. It is also unknown whether Apple will enable four-speaker surround sound on Apple TV 4K models already in use or reserve it for a future model.

Possible announcement date

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has said Apple plans to unveil new HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K models on October 13. Gurman also said that a full-sized HomePod update is planned eventually, without indicating that it will arrive at the same time.

If the surround feature is ready, the timing would give Apple an opportunity to present it alongside the new devices. Until Apple announces specific compatibility details, owners should treat the reports as an indication of development rather than a confirmed product capability.

What Apple TV supports today

Apple TV 4K currently allows users to set two HomePod or HomePod mini speakers as the default audio output for stereo sound. A four-speaker configuration would expand that setup into a more conventional home-theater arrangement, potentially giving Apple a stronger answer to dedicated wireless surround systems.
