Apple may be preparing a more flexible screenshot experience for the Apple Watch. Code found in watchOS 27.2 points to a feature that would show a preview after a screenshot is taken, with options to share or delete the image.

The feature was identified by code explorer pdfu and is currently hidden behind a feature flag, meaning it is not enabled for users. Apple could activate it in a later watchOS 27.2 beta, although the code does not confirm that the feature will ship publicly.

How Apple Watch screenshots work today

At present, an Apple Watch screenshot is sent directly to the Photos app on the paired iPhone. The watch does not show a confirmation screen or provide immediate controls for managing the capture.

Taking a screenshot requires pressing the Digital Crown and side button at the same time. Because the buttons can be pressed accidentally, unwanted screenshots may be created and then transferred to the iPhone without any prompt on the watch.

Screenshots are disabled by default on Apple Watch. Users can enable them through the Settings app on the watch or through the Apple Watch app on an iPhone.

What the possible new interface would do

The in-development feature appears to be modeled on the iPhone screenshot system. After capturing the screen, users could see a preview and choose whether to keep the image, share it, or delete it.

On iPhone, screenshots can appear as either a full-screen preview or a thumbnail, depending on the selected settings. Both formats provide quick actions for saving, sharing, and deleting the capture. A similar system on Apple Watch would give users more control before the image reaches the iPhone Photos library.

When the feature could arrive

There is no confirmed release date for the screenshot preview system. Its presence behind a disabled feature flag indicates that Apple is testing the functionality, but it could still change or be removed before a public release.

If Apple enables it in an upcoming watchOS 27.2 beta, testers may get an early look at how the preview appears and whether the controls work directly on the watch. Until then, Apple Watch users must continue managing screenshots from the paired iPhone.
