Sony will not update the Xperia 10 VI to Android 17, despite previously promising three Android version upgrades for the phone. The company says limitations related to the device’s storage configuration made it impossible to offer what it considers an adequate Android 17 experience.
The Xperia 10 VI launched in May 2024 with Android 14. Under Sony’s original update commitment, Android 17 was expected to be the phone’s third major Android upgrade. In a support notice, Sony said it conducted a detailed technical assessment before deciding not to release the update.
Why Sony is ending the Android 17 update
Sony attributed the decision specifically to the Xperia 10 VI’s storage configuration. The company’s explanation indicates that it tested the phone with the latest Android build, then concluded that the resulting upgrade experience would not meet its standards.
The notice does not provide further technical details about the storage limitation or explain which parts of the Android 17 experience would be affected. It does, however, make clear that the decision applies to the Xperia 10 VI rather than representing a broader change to Sony’s Xperia update plans.
Sony apologizes to Xperia 10 VI owners
Sony apologized to users for not keeping its original Android update promise. The reversal means owners will receive two major Android upgrades instead of the three that were initially indicated: the phone launched with Android 14 and will not proceed to Android 17.
For owners concerned about ongoing security, Sony confirmed that it will continue honoring its commitment to provide four years of security patches for the Xperia 10 VI. Security updates and Android version upgrades are separate parts of Sony’s support policy, so the cancellation of Android 17 does not end the phone’s promised security coverage.
Other Xperia phones are not affected
Sony also confirmed that no other Xperia models will be affected by this decision. The company’s notice is limited to the Xperia 10 VI, leaving the update arrangements for its other smartphones unchanged based on the information provided.
The decision highlights the difference between a manufacturer’s stated update policy and the support that ultimately reaches a specific device. For Xperia 10 VI owners, the practical result is that Android 16 will be the phone’s final major Android release, while security patches will continue under Sony’s four-year commitment.
