A new open-source utility called RemoveMacAI can disable Apple Intelligence on macOS 27, remove its downloaded models and block the system from downloading them again. Depending on the models installed, the tool can recover roughly 10GB or more of storage.

The utility is aimed at Mac owners who would rather reclaim disk space than use Apple’s AI features. That may be especially relevant on Macs with non-upgradeable 256GB drives, where system data and downloaded models can consume a significant portion of available capacity.

How RemoveMacAI removes Apple Intelligence models

Apple removed the system-wide Apple Intelligence disable switch in macOS 27. Turning off individual features also does not remove the underlying models from the Mac’s storage.

According to the tool’s developer, RemoveMacAI uses a configuration profile to disable Apple’s asset management service and remove the locally stored models. It then redirects requests to download those models to a closed local port, preventing them from being immediately restored.

The approach does not require users to disable System Integrity Protection or manually delete files from protected system locations. The developer’s documentation says the configuration profile can remain active across software updates, although Apple could change the system behavior in a future release.

Which Mac features stop working

Removing the models comes with a broad set of trade-offs. Users lose Apple Intelligence features tied to those models, including Siri-related AI capabilities, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground and ChatGPT integration.

Other affected functions include summaries, smart replies, inline predictions, Photos Clean Up, Spatial Photos and Xcode predictive completion. Standard dictation continues to work, according to the tool’s developer.

Some Macs may contain substantially more Apple Intelligence data than the roughly 10GB baseline cited for the utility. The amount recovered therefore depends on which models are present on a particular system.

Compatibility warning for macOS users

RemoveMacAI has attracted attention through its GitHub project and discussions on Reddit and Hacker News. However, its method depends on configuration-profile restriction keys that Apple deprecated in macOS 26.4.

Those keys reportedly still function in macOS 27.0.1, but that could change in a later update. Anyone considering the tool should understand that it is an unofficial system modification and that removing Apple Intelligence means giving up the associated features until the models are restored.
