The claim comes from tipster Yogesh Brar on X, who suggests OnePlus will skip the standard OnePlus 16 in India in favor of the more affordable 16R. In recent generations, OnePlus has typically released both a flagship number-series phone and an R-series variant in the country, with the R model using a slightly less powerful chipset, more modest cameras and a larger battery.

If the rumor holds, Indian buyers would miss out on a phone powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset. The OnePlus 16R would presumably rely on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, or possibly a non-Elite Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 should such a chip materialize.

Why it fits OnePlus' strategy

The report aligns with OnePlus' recent moves to scale back its global presence. The company has decided to exit the European and North American markets, part of a broader shift toward prioritizing China at the high end.
