Apple says the iPhone Duo’s nano-texture cover layer, positioned above the device’s inner display, can be removed and replaced. The company says the option will give owners a way to address wear or a more noticeable crease over time.
Kate Bergeron, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, discussed the feature in a recent interview with content creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi. Bergeron said the layer is replaceable and that customers can have it removed and receive a new one.
What the iPhone Duo cover layer does
The cover layer sits above the iPhone Duo’s inner display and helps conceal the crease running through the center of the foldable screen. Apple says it carried out substantial engineering work to keep the layer in good condition for as long as possible.
Even so, the layer may eventually show signs of wear, or the crease beneath it may become more visible. A replacement would allow customers to refresh that part of the display without replacing the entire device.
iPhone Duo cover layer replacement cost
In the United States, AppleCare+ customers can have the cover layer replaced for $19, according to Apple’s repair information. Apple has not disclosed the price for customers who do not have coverage.
Apple has not confirmed whether owners will be able to remove the cover layer themselves. Based on the service arrangement described so far, replacements are likely to be handled through Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers rather than as a routine user repair.
When the iPhone Duo goes on sale
Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo are scheduled to begin Friday, October 16, at 5 a.m. Pacific Time. The device is set to arrive in stores on Friday, October 23.
The replaceable layer gives Apple a way to address one of the most visible long-term concerns associated with an inner foldable display. However, important details remain unclear, including the out-of-warranty price and whether Apple will offer a straightforward replacement process outside its official service network.
