Apple’s iPhone Air and iPhone 18 Pro now start just $100 apart, but they target different priorities. The iPhone Air is thinner and lighter, with a slightly larger display, while the iPhone 18 Pro delivers a more capable camera system, longer battery life, faster performance, and better connectivity.
Apple sells the 256GB iPhone Air for $1,099 in the United States. The 256GB iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max begins at $1,299. At shared storage capacities, the standard Pro costs $100 more than the Air.
Design and display differences
The iPhone Air is the easier phone to carry. It weighs 5.82 ounces and measures 0.22 inches thick, compared with 7.44 ounces and 0.34 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro. Its 6.5-inch display is also slightly larger than the Pro’s 6.3-inch screen. The Pro Max has the largest display at 6.9 inches, but weighs 8.78 ounces.
Both models include an Always-On OLED display with ProMotion, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, an 18-megapixel Center Stage camera, Wi-Fi 7, and Apple Intelligence support. The Air uses a titanium frame and glass back, while the Pro has an aluminum unibody and Ceramic Shield back.
The Air has a standard Dynamic Island. The Pro models use a smaller Dynamic Island that supports up to three simultaneous Live Activities. The Air is available in Space Black, Cloud White, Sky Blue, and Light Gold; the Pro comes in Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy.
Camera and performance comparison
The iPhone 18 Pro is the clear choice for photography and video. It has a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with a variable aperture, plus 48-megapixel Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras. It supports macro photography, spatial photos, LiDAR, up to 8x optical-quality zoom, and up to 40x digital photo zoom.
The Air has one 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with fixed aperture and optical-quality 2x zoom. It can record 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 60 frames per second, while the Pro can record at up to 120 frames per second with its Fusion Main camera. The Pro also adds ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, genlock, advanced video controls, and DNG capture.
Performance also favors the Pro. The Air uses an A19 Pro chip with a five-core GPU, while the iPhone 18 Pro uses an A20 Pro chip with a seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engines. The Pro also includes vapor chamber cooling for better sustained performance.
Battery life, charging, and connectivity
Apple rates the iPhone Air for up to 27 hours of video playback or 22 hours of streamed video. The iPhone 18 Pro reaches 36 hours of playback and 33 hours of streaming. The Pro Max extends those figures to 45 and 40 hours.
The Air supports an optional MagSafe Battery that raises its video-playback estimate to 40 hours. The Pro charges more quickly with a compatible 60-watt adapter and supports MagSafe and Qi2 charging up to 25W, compared with 20W for the Air. The Pro also has USB 3 data speeds, DisplayPort output, stereo speakers, and four studio-quality microphones. The Air has USB 2 speeds and a single built-in speaker.
Which iPhone offers better value?
At Apple’s current prices, the iPhone 18 Pro is the stronger choice for most buyers. For $100 more, it adds substantially better cameras, longer battery life, faster charging, improved performance, stereo speakers, and more capable ports.
The iPhone Air remains appealing for people who value low weight, extreme thinness, and its distinctive design above all else. It becomes more compelling when discounted: a 256GB model has previously been available for $899.99, creating a roughly $300 gap with the iPhone 18 Pro.
Those considering the Air may also want to wait. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects a next-generation model in spring 2027, while Jeff Pu, Digital Chat Station, and The Information have separately reported possible changes including an Ultra Wide camera, a smaller Dynamic Island, an A20 Pro chip, a larger battery, and vapor chamber cooling. These claims remain forward-looking, but could address several of the current Air’s limitations.
