Insta360 may be working on a pair of AI-powered smart glasses, according to a report from China citing sources close to the company. The camera maker has not revealed specifications for the product, and it is not clear whether the reported project will reach the market.
A patent held by Insta360 could offer an early indication of the company’s thinking. The patent describes wearable glasses without a battery built into the frames. Instead, the battery would sit elsewhere on the user’s body and connect to the glasses with a cable.
What Insta360’s patent describes
The proposed arrangement would move the power source away from the glasses themselves. According to the patent description, the separate battery is intended to be worn on another part of the body, while a cable supplies power to the frames.
That design could help reduce the weight of the glasses and make them look more like conventional eyewear. Keeping the battery outside the frames may also give Insta360 more flexibility when designing the glasses’ shape, although the patent does not confirm how the company would implement the idea in a finished product.
No confirmed specifications yet
The report does not provide details about the glasses’ cameras, displays, sensors, software or AI features. It also does not establish whether the glasses would include any particular functions beyond the broad description of an AI-powered product.
Patent filings can describe possible approaches rather than final products. Insta360’s patent therefore should not be treated as confirmation that its eventual smart glasses will use an external battery, a cable or the same physical design. The company could also decide not to release the device at all.
How the glasses could fit Insta360’s product plans
Insta360 is best known for camera products, making smart glasses a potentially different form factor for the company. A lightweight design could be important if the glasses are intended to be worn for extended periods, while the separate battery could address the space and weight limits of ordinary frames.
For now, the reported project remains unconfirmed. More information will be needed before it is possible to determine whether Insta360 is developing a commercial product, what its AI capabilities might be or how the external power system would work in everyday use.
