Samsung's upcoming flagship phones could take a notable step forward in display quality. According to a report from Korean outlet ET News, citing industry sources, the company plans to fit the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra with its next-generation M16 OLED panel.

What the M16 OLED brings

The M16 is described as a significant upgrade over Samsung's current panels. The report says it will offer higher peak brightness, improved energy efficiency, a longer operational lifespan and more accurate color reproduction. Those improvements typically translate into better outdoor visibility and longer battery life, two areas that matter to buyers of premium phones.

Notably, the M16 OLED will not make its debut on the Galaxy S27 lineup. Samsung and iQOO confirmed at an event in China that the panel will feature on the upcoming iQOO 16. Separately, reports have suggested that Apple's iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the so-called iPhone Duo will also rely on the M16 panel, underscoring how widely Samsung's display division supplies rival brands.

A tiered approach across the S27 range

Not every model in the Galaxy S27 family is expected to receive the top-tier screen. The same report indicates the standard Galaxy S27 and the S27+ will use the M14 OLED instead. Even so, that would still represent an improvement over the M13 panels found in the current Galaxy S26 and S26+, meaning the entry-level models should benefit from the generational shift as well.

This kind of tiered panel strategy is common for Samsung, which reserves its most advanced components for the highest-priced handsets while still passing incremental upgrades down to more affordable variants.

Foldables in line for an upgrade too

The report also hints that the improvements will extend beyond Samsung's slab phones. The Galaxy Z Fold9 series is said to be moving past the M13 OLEDs currently in use, suggesting Samsung intends to refresh display hardware across both its bar-style flagships and its foldable lineup.

Why it matters

Display technology remains one of the clearest ways for a flagship phone to distinguish itself, and OLED panel generations directly affect brightness, color accuracy and battery endurance. If accurate, the reported plan would give the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra a competitive edge while keeping them aligned with other flagships expected to adopt the same M16 panel.

As with any pre-release information, these details come from industry sources rather than Samsung itself, so specifics could change before the phones are officially unveiled. Samsung has not confirmed the display plans for the Galaxy S27 series.
