AT&T has not confirmed plans to support iPhone Handoff, a new iOS 27 feature that lets customers switch between two iPhones while keeping the same phone number on both devices. The carrier says it sees potential in the capability but remains focused on its existing eSIM tools.

An AT&T spokesperson told CNET that the company is evaluating capabilities such as iPhone Handoff, while its current priority is delivering services that simplify connectivity. The spokesperson specifically pointed to existing eSIM activation and transfer options for compatible devices.

That response leaves AT&T's position open. The carrier did not rule out adding iPhone Handoff in the future, but it also did not announce a launch timetable or indicate that support is imminent.

How iPhone Handoff works

Apple introduced iPhone Handoff with iOS 27. The feature is designed to let a customer use the same phone number on two iPhones and move between them, rather than transferring cellular service manually each time.

Apple says the feature is available through iPhone settings on compatible devices. It is also ready from launch on Apple's iPhone 18 Pro lineup and iPhone Duo, according to T-Mobile.

iOS 27 became available on September 14. The feature is therefore dependent not only on the software update but also on carrier support, which currently varies by market.

Which carriers support iPhone Handoff?

T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom are the first carriers to offer iPhone Handoff. Apple has said that Verizon and EE will add support later this year, although the available information does not provide specific launch dates for either carrier.

In the United States, T-Mobile charges $5 per month for the service. Deutsche Telekom charges €6.95 per month, but only on plans that do not already include multi-SIM functionality.

The different carrier requirements mean that iPhone Handoff is not automatically available to every iOS 27 user. Customers must check whether their carrier supports the feature and whether their plan includes any required multi-SIM or related service.

AT&T customers still have eSIM transfer options

For now, AT&T is directing attention to the eSIM activation and transfer features it already offers across compatible devices. Those options can help customers move cellular service between devices, but they are distinct from iPhone Handoff's ability to keep one number available on two iPhones.

AT&T's cautious statement means customers should not assume that iPhone Handoff will work on the carrier simply because their iPhones run iOS 27. Support depends on AT&T making the feature available at the network and plan level.
