Apple is still developing its own privacy-focused home security camera and sensor for a planned 2027 release, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Gurman clarified that the product is separate from a group of LG-made smart home accessories also linked to Apple’s home strategy.
The distinction matters because the two projects have different approaches. Apple’s own device is expected to avoid recording video, instead using artificial intelligence to analyze activity in the home and identify which room a person is in.
Apple’s home camera will focus on privacy
Gurman said in a follow-up post on X that the cameras being developed with LG are “completely separate” from Apple’s privacy-centric home camera and sensor. The Apple-designed product is reportedly intended to monitor the home without continuously storing video footage.
Rather than functioning like a conventional security camera, the device would use AI to interpret the home environment. The reported room-detection capability could allow Apple to understand where someone is inside the house while limiting the need to capture or retain video.
Apple has not provided public product details in the information available so far, so the device’s final design, pricing and release timing remain unknown. The current expectation is that it will arrive sometime in 2027.
LG lineup includes cameras and other accessories
The LG-related project is described as a broader lineup of connected home products. It reportedly includes a video doorbell, a deadbolt lock, a thermostat, and indoor and outdoor cameras.
Those products would offer more familiar smart home functions, including video monitoring and home access control. They are not expected to launch for at least several more months, according to the available reporting.
Keeping the projects separate suggests Apple may be pursuing two complementary routes into the smart home. The LG lineup could provide a wider range of hardware, while Apple’s own product would emphasize local intelligence and reduced video capture.
Apple’s reported smart home plans
Bloomberg first reported in September that Apple was working toward a home security system and service planned for 2027. The reported effort would expand Apple’s presence beyond phones, computers and wearables into home monitoring and automation.
For consumers, the key difference will be how each product handles household data. LG’s reported accessories include conventional cameras, while Apple’s own device is expected to analyze the environment without recording video. More details will be needed to determine how the system stores data, processes AI tasks and works with other smart home products.
