Apple has released firmware version 3.2.0 for the USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable used with the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. It is the first firmware update for the charging cable since February 2023, replacing version 3.1.12.

The update is being delivered automatically, but Apple has not explained what changes it contains. There are also no release notes available for the cable firmware, so users will not be able to identify any specific improvements or fixes included in version 3.2.0.

How the MagSafe 3 cable update works

The firmware update does not require a download or a manual installation process. It will be installed over time when the MagSafe 3 cable is connected to both a Mac and a power adapter.

That means MacBook owners can receive the update during normal charging without taking any additional steps. Apple has not provided a way to force the installation, so users cannot manually apply version 3.2.0 if it has not yet reached their cable.

Apple does not show the cable firmware version

Unlike some other Apple accessories, the MagSafe 3 cable does not expose its firmware version in macOS’s System Information tool. Users therefore have no built-in way to confirm whether their cable is still running version 3.1.12 or has moved to version 3.2.0.

The lack of release notes and version visibility makes the update difficult to track. Unless Apple later documents the changes or adds version information to macOS, the practical effect of the new firmware will remain unclear.

What MacBook users need to know

  • Firmware version 3.2.0 is available for the USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable.
  • The previous cable firmware version was 3.1.12.
  • The update installs automatically when the cable is connected to a Mac and power adapter.
  • There is no manual installation option.
  • macOS does not display the cable’s firmware version in System Information.

The update applies to the MagSafe 3 charging cable used with MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models. For now, keeping the cable connected during normal charging is the only available way to allow the firmware update to install.
