Apple has quietly narrowed the compatibility of its new Texture and Grain controls for Photographic Styles, confirming that the camera options will not be available on older iPhone models. The controls are now listed as exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, along with certain cameras on the upcoming iPhone Duo.

The change follows an apparent inconsistency in Apple's original launch materials. When the iPhone 18 Pro models were announced, Apple's Newsroom release said the controls would be available in iOS 27 on iPhone models supporting the latest generation of Photographic Styles. That wording suggested a broader rollout.

Apple changes the iPhone 18 Pro compatibility wording

Copies of the original press release distributed through Business Wire and Notice Nearby still contain the broader compatibility language. Apple's current iPhone 18 Pro announcement, however, uses more specific wording.

The revised footnote says Texture and Grain controls are available “only for photos captured on iPhone 18 Pro models and with the Ultra Wide, Main, and Center Stage cameras on the iPhone Duo.” Apple's iOS 27 User Guide also says that changing the texture of a photo can be done “on iPhone 18 Pro models.”

The change excludes the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 17 series and iPhone Air, despite those devices being listed in the same guide as supporting the latest generation of Photographic Styles.

Why older iPhones are excluded

Apple has not explained why the controls are restricted to newer hardware. It is also unclear whether the company originally planned to support older iPhones and changed course, or whether the initial compatibility wording was published in error.

Apple's updated documentation does not provide a technical explanation for the limitation. As a result, owners of recent iPhone models may be able to use the broader Photographic Styles system but will not receive these particular editing controls in iOS 27.

What Texture and Grain do

Photographic Styles are tone presets that adjust a photo's colour and warmth while preserving skin tones. Texture and Grain add more control over the final appearance of images, allowing users to alter the look beyond the standard style adjustments.

For iPhone 18 Pro owners, the controls apply to photos captured with the supported Pro cameras. On the iPhone Duo, Apple's wording limits availability to photos taken with the Ultra Wide, Main and Center Stage cameras.

Apple's revised announcement is the clearest indication so far that the feature is not planned for older iPhones. Unless the company changes its documentation again or comments on the discrepancy, the original broader compatibility statement appears to have been incorrect.
