Apple has released iOS 27.0.1, the first maintenance update for iOS 27. The software addresses several problems affecting the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, including Face ID failures that could cause the devices to restart unexpectedly.

The update is available over the air through Settings > General > Software Update. Apple has also released iPadOS 27.0.1 and visionOS 27.0.1. For devices that have not moved to the latest major release, Apple is providing iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1.

Face ID failures get a software fix

According to Apple's release notes, iOS 27.0.1 fixes an issue in which the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could unexpectedly restart after Face ID failed to authenticate.

Users had reported Face ID problems during tasks such as unlocking protected apps. Some devices reportedly became unresponsive and rebooted, while others displayed a “Face ID is Not Available” message during setup. Problems with the Require Attention for Face ID setting were also reported.

The iPhone 18 Pro models are the first to use an infrared camera positioned beneath the display. Apple has not said whether that hardware is related to the authentication problems. The company previously said that a software update would address the Face ID bugs.

Other iPhone 18 Pro fixes in iOS 27.0.1

Apple's release notes identify two additional fixes aimed at the iPhone 18 Pro lineup:

  • A color artifact could appear in photos taken at 2x magnification under certain lighting conditions at f/1.48 on a small number of devices.
  • Opening Notification Center and Control Center at the same time could make the touchscreen unresponsive.

Although the most prominent fixes target the latest Pro models, iOS 27.0.1 is available for every iPhone that supports iOS 27. That means eligible users do not need an iPhone 18 Pro to install the update.

How to install iOS 27.0.1

To check for the update, open the Settings app, select General, and tap Software Update. The iPhone will check Apple's servers and display iOS 27.0.1 if it is available for the device.

The release arrives about two weeks after iOS 27, making it an early stability update for Apple's latest iPhone operating system. Users who have experienced Face ID authentication failures, unexpected restarts, or an unresponsive touchscreen should install it when convenient.
