Apple is now giving iPhone users still running iOS 26 a stronger prompt to install iOS 27.0.1. The newer release appears as the primary update in Settings under General and Software Update, while iOS 26.7.1 has moved into a smaller “Also Available” section.

The change does not force users to upgrade. Instead, it changes the order in which Apple presents the available software versions, making iOS 27.0.1 the most visible choice for devices that have not yet moved to the company’s latest major iPhone operating system.

iOS 27.0.1 is now the main update option

Apple released iOS 27 on September 14. Until now, iPhone owners on iOS 26 saw iOS 26.7 and then iOS 26.7.1 in the prominent position within Software Update. iOS 27 and the subsequent iOS 27.0.1 release were instead placed under “Also Available.”

That arrangement has now been reversed. When affected users check for updates, iOS 27.0.1 is highlighted first, with iOS 26.7.1 presented as the secondary option. The interface change gives Apple a more direct way to encourage adoption of the newer operating system without removing the older branch.

Users can still remain on iOS 26

Apple is not requiring iPhone owners to install iOS 27. Users who prefer to stay on iOS 26 can still choose iOS 26.7.1 from the “Also Available” section.

However, Apple recommends installing iOS 26.7.1 for people who do not want to upgrade yet. That release includes the latest security fixes available for the iOS 26 branch, allowing users to remain on the older version while receiving current security maintenance.

What the update change means

The adjustment suggests Apple is moving into a later phase of its iOS 27 rollout. Major operating system updates are often adopted gradually, particularly by users who prefer to wait for early bugs to be addressed or who want to remain on a familiar interface.

By placing iOS 27.0.1 at the top of Software Update, Apple is reducing the steps required for users who are ready to move forward. At the same time, keeping iOS 26.7.1 available preserves an option for people who are not prepared to make the jump to the new major release.

Apple has not yet shared adoption figures for iOS 27, so it is not clear how many iPhone users remain on iOS 26. The update presentation is currently the clearest indication that Apple wants more compatible devices to transition to the newer software.
