Apple Marks the 2019 21.5-Inch 4K iMac as a Vintage Product

Apple has classified the 2019 21.5-inch 4K iMac as a vintage product, a change that limits how the aging all-in-one can be serviced going forward. The update appears on Apple's official list of vintage and obsolete products.

What vintage status means for owners

Apple adds a device to its vintage list five years after it stopped selling it, and shifts it to the obsolete category once seven years have passed. Vintage machines can still be repaired at Apple Stores and by Apple Authorized Service Providers, but only if the necessary parts remain in stock. That availability is not guaranteed, so owners may find it increasingly difficult to have the computer fixed.

Once a product reaches obsolete status, Apple no longer offers repairs at all and stops producing replacement components. In practical terms, the vintage label is an early warning that hardware support is winding down.

The last of its kind

The 2019 iMac was the final version of the 21.5-inch model to ship with the traditional silver design and Intel processors. It preceded the redesigned, colorful M1 iMac that Apple introduced in 2021, marking the transition to the company's own Apple silicon chips.

The machine featured a 21.5-inch Retina 4K display. Its base configuration paired an Intel Core i3 processor with 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive, and it started at $1,299 when it launched in 2019.

A staggered move to vintage

The 2019 iMac lineup also included a 27-inch model sold alongside the smaller version. That larger machine was added to the vintage list in July 2025. The 21.5-inch variant qualified later because Apple continued selling it for a longer stretch, pushing back the five-year threshold that triggers the designation.

For anyone still relying on one of these Intel-based iMacs, the change is a reminder to plan ahead. As parts inventories dwindle, out-of-warranty repairs could become harder to arrange, and eventually impossible once the model becomes obsolete. Owners weighing a costly fix may want to factor in the shrinking window of official support before committing.
