WhatsApp has introduced guest calling, allowing people to join voice or video calls without creating a WhatsApp account. Users can generate a call link from the app and share it with anyone, including people who do not use WhatsApp.

The calls remain free and end-to-end encrypted, with no time limit and support for up to 32 participants. People can join from a computer browser using a WhatsApp call link, making the feature useful for inviting contacts who do not want to install the app or sign up for an account.

How WhatsApp guest calls work

WhatsApp users can create a guest call from the Calls tab by tapping the plus button and choosing the option to create a call link. The link can then be sent to prospective participants through another service or communication channel.

Guests do not enter a call immediately. They first appear in a waiting room, where the host must approve their entry. The host can also remove guests from the call at any time.

WhatsApp limits what guests can do. They cannot see the phone numbers of other participants, send messages, or invite additional people. Those restrictions give the host control over who joins while allowing account-free participation.

Guest features and privacy controls

Once admitted, guests can use several of WhatsApp’s call features. These include screen sharing, thumbs-up and heart reactions, and a raised-hand function for asking to speak.

The waiting room and host controls are particularly relevant for calls involving people outside a regular WhatsApp contact list. A host can review each visitor before allowing them into the conversation, rather than relying only on possession of the invitation link.

Calendar integrations are planned

WhatsApp says it plans to add calendar integrations later this year. The planned feature will allow users to create a WhatsApp call from a Google Calendar or Outlook calendar.

Browser-based joining brings WhatsApp closer to the account-free calling experience Apple added to FaceTime with iOS 15. FaceTime links similarly allow people to join a call without having a FaceTime account, while WhatsApp’s new option extends that model to its own voice and video calling service.
