Google’s September Pixel Drop is rolling out to Pixel phones from the Pixel 6 series onward, bringing improvements to the VIP contacts widget, new scam warnings and expanded digital wellbeing features. The update also adds Harry Potter-themed customization tied to Audible’s new full-cast audiobooks.

The rollout begins today but will happen in stages. Carrier-sold phones may receive the update in the coming weeks, and feature availability can vary by region and language. The Pixel Tablet is not included in this release.

VIP contacts widget gets faster actions

The VIP contacts widget now lets users call or message a priority contact with a single tap. It also displays badges for missed calls and messages, making it easier to spot activity from important contacts.

A floating menu at the bottom of the widget provides a quicker way to move between VIP contacts. The changes are designed to make the widget more useful for people who want immediate access to a small group of key contacts without opening the full phone or messaging apps.

Pixel adds on-device scam warnings

Google is adding Scam Detection to Gboard and notifications. When a user begins responding to a suspicious message, Gboard can show a “Likely scam” warning chip above the keyboard. Similar warnings can appear directly on notifications before a conversation is opened.

The processing happens on the device, which Google says helps keep conversations private. The feature currently supports Arabic, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese and Spanish.

Scam Detection was initially available only in the United States. The September update expands coverage to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Availability may still depend on the device’s region and language settings.

Pause Point reaches older Pixel phones

Pause Point, introduced with the Pixel 11 series, is now available on Pixel phones dating back to the Pixel 6 line. The feature adds an extra confirmation step before opening selected distracting apps, giving users a brief opportunity to reconsider launching them.

It is intended as a simple digital wellbeing tool rather than a full app-blocking system. Google’s rollout table determines which features are available on each supported Pixel model, while the Pixel Tablet remains excluded.

Harry Potter themes arrive with an Audible trial

To coincide with Audible’s release of the Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions, Google is offering Harry Potter Audiobook Packs for Pixel users. The packs can change app icons and wallpaper and add sounds from the books.

Eligible Pixel users can also claim a two-month Audible trial. The offer is available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, Japan and Australia through January 14. The Harry Potter themes are available through December 31.

Google also updated the Pixel Watch with an improved Raise to Talk gesture model, more integrations for One Handed gestures and various bug fixes.
