Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy S26 Ultra deliver much of the same flagship hardware, but they make very different compromises. The foldable offers a large internal display and more flexible ways to use its cameras, while the conventional S26 Ultra is thinner in profile, more durable and stronger in several practical areas.

Both phones use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset, offer 12GB of RAM as standard with 16GB options, and provide storage capacities ranging from 256GB to 1TB. Neither supports expandable storage, and both include features such as Samsung DeX and Ultra Wideband.

Design and display differences

The two phones have surprisingly similar overall footprints and weigh almost the same, despite the Z Fold8 Ultra containing two displays. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is wider and taller, with a conventional 6.9-inch 19.5:9 screen that is comfortable for typing and general-purpose use.

The Z Fold8 Ultra uses a narrower 6.5-inch cover display and an almost square 8.9-inch internal panel. The outer screen suits feeds, articles and cinematic video, but typing can feel cramped. Unfolded, the larger display is better for multitasking, productivity and tablet-optimized apps, although 16:9 video leaves more unused space.

All three displays support adaptive 120Hz refresh rates. The S26 Ultra has the sharper panel on paper at 1440 by 3120 pixels, while both Fold screens reach 422 pixels per inch. Samsung rates the Fold displays at up to 3,000 nits and the S26 Ultra at 2,600 nits, but real-world measurements bring them much closer. The S26 Ultra also adds S Pen support and a hardware-based Privacy Display.

Durability, battery and charging

The S26 Ultra has the clearer durability advantage. Its rigid screen avoids the plastic covering and crease associated with the foldable's inner display. Samsung says the Z Fold8 Ultra's new Flex Titanium construction improves impact resistance, reduces crease visibility and supports a thinner display assembly, but it remains the more delicate design.

Water resistance is similar in practical terms, with both phones rated for immersion in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for 30 minutes. However, the S26 Ultra carries IP68 protection, while the Z Fold8 Ultra is rated IP48 and offers less protection against dust.

Each device has a 5,000mAh battery, but the S26 Ultra lasts longer, especially when the Fold's internal screen is used frequently. Charging is another win for the conventional phone: it supports 60W wired charging and 25W Qi2.2 wireless charging, compared with 45W wired and 20W wireless charging on the Z Fold8 Ultra.

Performance, speakers and cameras

The S26 Ultra produces slightly higher burst performance in testing, likely because of differences in thermal and performance tuning. Both phones throttle significantly during sustained workloads, so neither has a decisive advantage for long, demanding sessions. The S26 Ultra also delivers louder, better-separated stereo sound, while the Fold's speakers are quieter and less ideally positioned when the phone is open.

Camera hardware is broadly similar, including a 200MP main camera and comparable 50MP ultrawide and 3x telephoto systems. The S26 Ultra adds a dedicated 5x telephoto camera, giving it a clear advantage for long-range zoom. Its main camera also uses a brighter f/1.4 lens, compared with f/1.7 on the Fold, although daylight images from the primary cameras are very similar.

The S26 Ultra has one 12MP autofocus selfie camera. The Z Fold8 Ultra includes two 10MP selfie cameras, one on each display, while its foldable design also lets users frame selfies with the rear cameras.

Which Samsung flagship should you choose?

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the better choice for buyers who value a tablet-sized screen, multitasking and foldable flexibility above all else. Its cover display and hinge introduce compromises, but the internal panel offers capabilities the S26 Ultra cannot match.

For most buyers, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is the more balanced flagship. It offers longer battery life, faster charging, better speakers, stronger dust protection, S Pen support and a dedicated 5x zoom camera. The Z Fold8 Ultra is the specialist option; the S26 Ultra is the safer all-rounder.
