Apple has confirmed that the newly announced foldable iPhone Duo will support stylus input, but only with the $79 Apple Pencil that uses USB-C charging. The pricier $129 Apple Pencil Pro, which many iPad owners already use, will not work with the device.

Why Apple Pencil Pro Won't Work

The limitation appears to come down to hardware design rather than software restrictions. The Apple Pencil Pro relies on a magnetic surface to charge and pair with compatible iPads, and the iPhone Duo does not appear to include that magnetic charging capability. The USB-C Apple Pencil, by contrast, charges through a USB-C port hidden behind a sliding cap, making it compatible with a wider range of devices that lack the magnetic charging strip found on iPads.

Because of this hardware difference, iPhone Duo owners who already invested in an Apple Pencil Pro for use with an iPad will need to purchase a separate USB-C Apple Pencil if they want to use a stylus with their new foldable iPhone.

What You Lose With the USB-C Apple Pencil

The USB-C Apple Pencil is a more basic accessory compared to its Pro sibling. It lacks several features found on the Apple Pencil Pro, including:

  • Pressure sensitivity
  • Double-tap gesture support
  • Barrel roll rotation
  • Haptic feedback
  • Squeeze gesture
  • Find My tracking

The USB-C model does retain tilt sensitivity, which allows for some shading and angle-based input, but overall it offers a more limited feature set than the $129 Apple Pencil Pro.

Dual-Display Support and Launch Timing

According to Apple, the Apple Pencil will work across both the inner foldable display and the outer display of the iPhone Duo, marking the first time an iPhone has offered stylus support in any form. However, this functionality won't be ready when the device first ships. Apple says Apple Pencil support for the iPhone Duo will arrive via a software update later this year, after the phone is already in customers' hands.

The iPhone Duo is set to launch on October 23, with pre-orders opening on October 16. Apple unveiled the device as a new category of iPhone featuring two screens joined by a foldable inner display, with both halves sharing the same aspect ratio for a seamless transition between open and closed states. Apple has said that when fully unfolded, the iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone the company has ever produced.

Why It Matters

For prospective buyers who already own an Apple Pencil Pro, the news means an additional purchase is likely necessary to get stylus functionality on the iPhone Duo. It also signals that Apple may be treating the foldable iPhone's stylus support as a secondary, budget-tier feature rather than a flagship-level input method, at least for now. Whether future hardware revisions add magnetic charging and full Apple Pencil Pro compatibility remains to be seen.
