Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max represent a substantial upgrade over the iPhone 15 Pro lineup introduced three years earlier. The newer models combine larger displays, a redesigned body, upgraded cameras, longer battery life, faster charging, and a newer A20 Pro chip.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 with 256GB of storage, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. That is more than the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max cost at launch, but Apple has doubled the entry-level storage for the Pro model. The iPhone 15 Pro is now discontinued, so current prices depend on third-party availability, condition, and warranty.

Design and display changes

The iPhone 18 Pro replaces the iPhone 15 Pro’s titanium frame and glass back with an aluminum unibody and partial Ceramic Shield back. The new design is intended to improve heat dissipation, but it also makes the newer phone heavier. The iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211 grams, compared with 187 grams for the iPhone 15 Pro, while the Pro Max weighs 249 grams.

Screen sizes increase from 6.1 to 6.3 inches on the smaller models and from 6.7 to 6.9 inches on the Max models. The iPhone 18 Pro also has thinner borders, a 1-nit minimum brightness, an anti-reflective coating, and outdoor peak brightness of 3,000 nits, compared with 2,000 nits on the iPhone 15 Pro. Its smaller Dynamic Island supports up to three simultaneous Live Activities.

Performance, battery life, and charging

Apple’s A20 Pro chip is built using TSMC’s 2nm process and includes 12GB of LPDDR5X memory, compared with the A17 Pro, 8GB of LPDDR5 memory, and a first-generation 3nm process in the iPhone 15 Pro. The newer phone also adds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, an Apple N1 connectivity chip, and expanded cooling hardware.

Battery life is one of the clearest reasons to upgrade. Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback, versus 23 hours for the iPhone 15 Pro. The Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours, compared with 29 hours for its 15 Pro counterpart. Wired charging can reach 50% in around 15 minutes with a compatible 60W-capable adapter, while MagSafe and Qi2 charging both support up to 25W.

A major camera upgrade

The iPhone 18 Pro moves to a variable-aperture Main camera with four settings ranging from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4.0. Its Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras both use 48-megapixel Fusion sensors, compared with 12-megapixel cameras on the iPhone 15 Pro. The newer model also adds 48-megapixel macro photography, enhanced depth mapping, Photographic Styles 3, and expanded camera controls.

Telephoto capability changes depending on the model. Owners of the smaller iPhone 15 Pro move from 3x optical zoom to 4x, with an optical-quality 8x option. The iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 5x camera becomes a 4x camera, but the higher-resolution sensor enables the same 8x option.

Who should upgrade?

For most iPhone 15 Pro owners, the iPhone 18 Pro is a worthwhile upgrade if battery life, photography, or video recording are priorities. The newer model supports higher-frame-rate 4K recording, ProRes RAW, Genlock, Apple Log 2, Dual Capture, and improved audio tools. Its 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera can also frame portrait and landscape shots without rotating the phone.

Users who are satisfied with their current battery, cameras, and performance may not need to upgrade immediately. However, the cumulative improvements across three generations make the iPhone 18 Pro a meaningful replacement rather than a minor refresh.
