Huawei has launched the Mate 90 Pro and Mate 90 in China, bringing new Kirin chipsets, 6,600mAh batteries and updated camera hardware to its latest flagship phones. The Mate 90 Pro stands out with a dual-layer OLED display rated for up to 12,000 nits of peak brightness, while the standard Mate 90 delivers a lower starting price and a significant telephoto upgrade.

Both phones use 6.75-inch LTPO OLED panels with 1280p-plus resolution and adaptive refresh rates from 1Hz to 120Hz. Huawei has not announced global availability for either model.

Mate 90 Pro adds dual-layer OLED technology

The Mate 90 Pro uses a dual-layer OLED panel, a display design Huawei says can reach 12,000 nits at peak brightness. The screen is protected by third-generation Kunlun glass and supports touch input when wet, making it usable in rainy conditions.

The phone has a metal frame, a nylon-fiber rear panel and IP68 protection against submersion to 6 meters. It also carries an IP69K rating for resistance to hot water jets. The Pro is available with 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of storage, with no memory card slot.

Huawei’s new Kirin 9035 powers the Pro. The company says it is 20% faster than the chipset used in the previous Pro model. Its GPU supports hardware ray tracing and is rated to render 31 million rays per second.

Large batteries and fast charging

The Mate 90 Pro contains a 6,600mAh battery, up from 5,750mAh in the previous Pro. Huawei claims up to 41 hours of continuous video playback. Charging supports 100W over a cable and 50W wirelessly, along with 18W wired and wireless reverse charging.

The Mate 90 uses the same 6,600mAh capacity and claimed 41-hour video endurance. Its wired charging is limited to 66W, while wireless charging remains 50W. Both phones support Beidou satellite messaging, including the ability to exchange photos, as well as dual-SIM and eSIM connectivity.

Mate 90 gets a new telephoto camera

The Mate 90 Pro has a 50MP RYYB main camera with optical stabilization and a variable f/1.4-f/4.0 aperture. It is joined by a 40MP RYYB ultrawide camera and a 50MP RYYB telephoto camera with 4x optical magnification, optical stabilization and an f/2.1 aperture. The telephoto lens also supports macro photography from as close as 5cm.

The standard Mate 90 keeps the 50MP main and 40MP ultrawide cameras but uses a different 50MP telephoto system. Its stabilized 4x lens has an f/2.2 aperture and an 88mm focal length, without the Pro’s macro mode. Even so, it is a substantial change from the Mate 80’s 12MP, 5.5x telephoto camera.
