Apple gave members of the media a chance to test the new foldable iPhone Duo following its September 2026 event, and early hands-on impressions suggest the company has made real progress on one of the biggest complaints about foldable phones: the crease.

How visible is the crease?

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and uses a nano-texture polymer on its inner display, a material designed to cut glare while also softening the appearance of the fold line. According to Apple, the display layer features a micro lens texture etched pixel by pixel using maskless laser lithography, producing what the company describes as a perceptually flat, matte surface.

In practice, the crease is still visible under certain lighting conditions, but it appears less pronounced than on comparable Samsung foldables. Apple also said viscoelastic adhesives allow the internal layers to glide over one another, which may help the display hold up as it's folded and unfolded repeatedly over time. It remains to be seen how the crease looks after months of regular use.

Under-screen camera and design

The inner display has no visible camera cutout because Apple placed the front camera underneath the screen. The camera area is essentially invisible against lighter content but becomes slightly more noticeable when the display shows darker imagery.

The outer display measures 5.4 inches, making the closed device smaller than the iPhone 18 Pro, while the inner display expands to 7.6 inches when unfolded. Apple says the fully open Duo is the thinnest iPhone the company has made.

Software built for two screens

Apple has adapted iOS so that apps place their main controls along the side of the display and use a new vertical dock, with the status bar tucked into a corner to suit the foldable shape. Two apps can run side by side, including two windows of the same app, though neither can be resized — each simply occupies half the screen. Users can also pair two apps so they launch together automatically.

Apps continue to function whether the Duo is fully open, closed, or held at a half-folded angle. When propped up in a tent position, controls shift to the bottom of the display, and iOS adjusts content and audio based on the device's angle and orientation, keeping elements away from the crease. Apple's StandBy feature also works unpowered in tent mode, displaying widgets, music controls, and a bedside clock, including a new glow-based alarm.

Cameras and pricing

The iPhone Duo includes just two rear cameras: a 48-megapixel Fusion Main sensor and a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide, with no dedicated telephoto lens — 2x zoom is achieved through cropping. The outer display's front camera is 12 megapixels.

Apple built several features around the dual-screen design, including 4K Dolby Vision time-lapses, an AI-driven Smart Take mode that captures a photo once everyone is in frame, a
