Apple's upcoming iPhone Duo includes a little-known display option that widens the black border on the left side of the screen, apparently to keep gesture navigation working when a case slightly overlaps the panel.

What the Shift Left Edge setting does

The option, called "Shift Left Edge," lives in the Display & Brightness menu. When enabled, it roughly doubles the width of the narrow black border along the left side of the foldable's display. The purpose is to make room for cases that cover part of that edge while ensuring the iOS back swipe gesture continues to register as expected.

The setting was spotted by blogger Nicolas Lellouche during hands-on time with the device shortly after Apple's iPhone event livestream last week. He shared the discovery publicly, drawing attention to a feature Apple did not highlight during its presentation.

Why it matters for cases

Apple sells two official accessories for the new foldable: an iPhone Duo Case and a Folio with Kickstand. It is not clear whether either of these products actually covers the left edge of the display, and it seems unlikely Apple would design its own cases to do so.

The more plausible explanation is that the setting exists to accommodate bulkier third-party protective cases, which sometimes wrap over the edges of a phone's screen. On a device with edge-based swipe gestures, even a small physical overlap could interfere with navigation. Widening the software border gives those gestures a reliable place to start.
