Apple has paused development of a camera-equipped AI wearable that could have been worn as a pin or pendant, according to Bloomberg. The device was designed to give Siri information about the user's surroundings and answer questions about what the wearer was seeing.
The project illustrates Apple's broader interest in AI hardware that can understand the physical world, but the reported delay makes a previously rumored 2027 launch less likely. Apple is still said to be exploring several other wearable products, including smart glasses and camera-equipped AirPods.
What Apple's AI wearable was expected to do
The wearable was reportedly built around a camera that would capture details from the environment and relay them to Siri. That could have enabled Visual Intelligence-style features, allowing the assistant to respond to questions about the user's location or the objects and scenes in front of them.
Rather than using a conventional screen, the device would have relied on Siri and connected Apple products to provide responses. Its proposed design was intended to be worn discreetly, either clipped to clothing or suspended around the neck.
AirTag-sized design and physical controls
Apple's prototype was described as a thin, circular disc roughly comparable in size to an AirTag. It reportedly used aluminum and glass and included a physical button on its side.
The form factor would have placed the camera close to the wearer while keeping the device smaller than a phone. However, the available report does not indicate whether Apple had finalized the product's design, pricing, software experience, or privacy features.
Launch timing is now uncertain
Earlier rumors had pointed to a possible introduction as soon as 2027. With development now reportedly postponed, that timetable appears less likely, and Apple has not announced a release date or confirmed the product publicly.
A camera worn on the body would raise practical questions about recording people and places in public, although no specific policy or privacy details were provided in the report. The device's reliance on AI would also depend on Siri's ability to interpret images quickly and accurately.
Other Apple wearables remain in development
The paused AI pin is reportedly only one of several wearable projects under consideration at Apple. The company is also working on a screen-free fitness band, AI-focused smart glasses, and AirPods that include cameras.
Those products could give Apple other ways to bring contextual AI beyond the iPhone. For now, however, the reported pause suggests that Apple's smallest AI wearable will not arrive as soon as earlier speculation indicated.
