Amazon has announced three new Alexa tablets that run Android, include Google Play access, and bring the Alexa+ assistant to the device. Prices start at $229.99, while the range-topping Alexa Tablet 12 Pro starts at $499.99.

The move replaces Amazon's Fire OS and its separate app store with Android and direct access to apps including YouTube, Gmail, and Google Docs. That change addresses one of the most significant limitations of Amazon's previous tablet lineup as the company targets Apple's iPad range.

Alexa Tablet 12 Pro targets the iPad Pro

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro has a 12-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and an adaptive refresh rate reaching 120Hz. It uses a MediaTek Dimensity 8400 processor, includes 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in its base configuration, and has a 6.5mm aluminum body.

Other features include Wi-Fi 6E, four Dolby Atmos speakers, and up to 16 hours of video playback according to Amazon. A $549.99 configuration adds a “Nanomatte” display made with precision-etched Corning glass to reduce reflections. Amazon also offers configurations with up to 16GB of RAM, and the matte display can be paired with 128GB of storage.

Accessories include a $149.99 Pro Keyboard and an $89.99 Pro Pen. Both attach magnetically. The keyboard has a trackpad and connects without Bluetooth pairing, while the pen supports pressure sensitivity and wireless charging. The tablet also supports multiple app windows for multitasking.

Two smaller tablets start at $229.99

The 11-inch Alexa Tablet starts at $329.99 with 8GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It has an 11-inch 2.5K display with a 90Hz refresh rate, while a 128GB version costs $379.99.

The compact Alexa Tablet 8 starts at $229.99 with an 8.7-inch display, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. Amazon says the 11-inch and Pro models can deliver up to 20 hours of reading, while the smaller model reaches up to 19 hours.

A Kindle reading mode silences notifications and reduces blue-light output. Alexa+ can answer questions and control compatible smart-home devices through voice or touch. An optional On-Screen Intelligence feature can respond to displayed content, but screen access is disabled by default and a visual indicator appears when the feature is active.

Kids models add parental controls

Amazon also announced Kids versions in 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes, priced from $229.99 and $329.99. Models for children ages three and up include a soft bumper case, while versions for ages six and up use a slim hard case. Each includes one year of Amazon Kids+ and parent-managed access to Google Play.

Parents can set screen-time limits, filter content, and monitor activity through the Parent Dashboard on iOS and Android. A new AI-powered Storybuilder feature lets children create illustrated stories using their voices.

Availability and pricing

Orders open October 8, with shipping beginning October 14 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tablets are scheduled to follow on October 19 in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. The Kids models will also launch in Japan on October 14.

Tablet-specific Alexa+ access is included with the devices. Full Alexa+ access across compatible Alexa products requires an Amazon Prime membership or a separate Alexa+ subscription.
