Amazon has unveiled two Android tablets designed specifically for children, offering 8.7-inch and 11-inch versions for different age groups. The younger children’s model is intended for ages 3 and up, while the larger tablet is designed for children ages 6 and older.
The tablets are available to pre-order in the US, Mexico, Canada and Japan, with shipping scheduled to begin on October 14. Amazon says they will arrive in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain on October 19.
Two sizes with age-specific hardware
The smaller tablet includes 64GB of storage and is rated for up to 14 hours of video playback. Amazon has not described it simply as an 8-inch device in its specifications, listing the display size as 8.7 inches, although the starting price is described as applying to the 8-inch model.
The 11-inch version features a 2.5K display and 8GB of RAM. Pricing starts at $229.99 for the smaller model and $329.99 for the 11-inch model.
Each tablet comes with a protective case matched to its intended age group. The younger model includes a soft bumper, while the tablet for older children comes with a slim hard case. Amazon says case designs include characters and themes from Paw Patrol, Barbie and SpongeBob SquarePants.
Kids+ content and parental controls
Both tablets run Android and include a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+. The service offers curated content from Disney, Nickelodeon, Lego and Sesame Street, along with parent-managed access to Google Play.
After the included year, Kids+ costs $7.99 per month for Prime members and $8.99 per month for customers without Prime. Amazon says the tablet experience is tailored to a child’s age and can adapt as their interests change, from entertainment and creative apps to homework tools.
The Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard is installed on both devices. Parents can use it to set screen-time limits, apply content filters and monitor activity. The dashboard is also available as an app for iOS and Android, allowing controls from other devices.
Storybuilder adds a kid-focused AI feature
Amazon is also introducing Storybuilder, an AI-powered creative experience built into the tablets. Children can use their voice to create characters, plot developments and fictional worlds, which Storybuilder turns into picture books and comic books that they can share with their parents.
Amazon says the feature includes safeguards intended to keep results age-appropriate. The company describes Storybuilder as a purpose-built experience with guardrails designed to support safer exploration for children.
With the new tablets, Amazon is combining lower-cost Android hardware with a subscription content service and remote parental management. The two sizes and separate cases give families a choice based on a child’s age, while the included Kids+ access and Storybuilder provide much of the software experience beyond the hardware itself.
