Microsoft is preparing to end OneDrive support for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, a change that will affect several older iPhone models and the seventh-generation iPad. The company’s cloud storage app will require iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 for future updates.
The affected iPhones are the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. These devices cannot be upgraded to iOS 26, so they will remain on the last OneDrive version compatible with iOS 18. The seventh-generation iPad faces the same limitation because it cannot move to iPadOS 26.
OneDrive 18.12.1 will be the final compatible version
Microsoft’s latest TestFlight beta release notes identify OneDrive version 18.12.1 as the final version supporting iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. The release notes indicate that later versions will require Apple’s newer operating systems.
Microsoft has also added a notice to OneDrive’s App Store listing stating that support for iOS and iPadOS 18 will end “soon.” The notice recommends updating to iOS 26 or iOS 27 to continue receiving the latest versions of the app.
Microsoft has not provided a specific date for when the requirement will change in the public App Store release. That means users on affected devices may still be able to install or use the current version for now, although the transition is expected to happen in a future update.
What happens to OneDrive on affected devices
Existing OneDrive installations are not expected to stop working immediately when Microsoft ends support for the older operating systems. Users should still be able to access the version already installed on their devices, subject to the app’s existing functionality and any broader service requirements.
However, those installations will no longer receive new OneDrive features, bug fixes, or other app updates after Microsoft moves to the newer minimum requirement. Over time, compatibility issues could become more significant as the service and its app evolve.
Which devices are affected?
- iPhone XR: Cannot be updated to iOS 26.
- iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max: Will remain limited to the final iOS 18-compatible OneDrive release.
- Seventh-generation iPad: Cannot be updated to iPadOS 26.
Owners of these devices can continue using their current OneDrive app for now, but they will need newer Apple hardware to receive future versions once Microsoft completes the change.
