Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max arrive on September 18 with refreshed designs, a smaller Dynamic Island, new camera hardware, and upgraded internal components. Initial hands-on impressions point to a heavier phone with more effective cooling, while the biggest visible changes are the new finishes and reduced front display cutout.

New iPhone 18 Pro colors and design

The iPhone 18 Pro models use a more uniform design than their predecessors. Apple now matches the glass back with the aluminum frame, removing the contrast between those materials that defined last year's two-tone appearance.

The available finishes are glacier, burgundy, silver, and black. Glacier is a light blue that looks distinctly blue rather than silver. The phones are also heavier than the iPhone 17 Pro models. The iPhone 18 Pro Max weighs 249 grams, compared with 233 grams for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Smaller Dynamic Island and Live Activities

Apple moved the infrared camera beneath the display, allowing it to reduce the size of the Dynamic Island. The smaller cutout is the most noticeable change on the front of the phone.

The Dynamic Island can also display more information at once. It supports three Live Activities simultaneously, or two Live Activities with additional detail, giving users more room to track ongoing events without opening an app.

Variable-aperture camera adds more control

The iPhone 18 Pro introduces a variable-aperture Main camera with a new sensor and an updated computational photography system. The lens has four aperture settings and can automatically adjust to changing light. It can use a narrower aperture in bright conditions and open wider when more light is needed.

Apple's system is designed to work automatically, but photographers can take more direct control through new Pro Controls. These settings include aperture, shutter speed, and white balance adjustments. A histogram is also available to help users evaluate exposure.

The variable aperture could be especially useful in low-light photography, while the added controls give experienced users more flexibility over how images are captured.

A20 Pro, cooling, and modem differences

Both models use Apple's 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip. Everyday tasks such as browsing and social media may not show a dramatic performance difference, but Apple has expanded the vapor chamber cooling system to three times its previous surface area. That should help the phone remain cooler during demanding activities such as gaming.

Apple also claims longer battery life, rated at up to 36 hours of video playback for the iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours for the Pro Max. Those figures still require testing under real-world use.

Modem hardware varies by region and model. In the United States, the iPhone 18 Pro uses Apple's C2 modem, while the Pro Max uses a Qualcomm modem. Outside the U.S., both models use the C2. The C2 adds mmWave 5G support and is described as more efficient than Qualcomm's modems.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Both models launch September 18.
