Bose has unveiled two new open-ear headphones: the second-generation Ultra Open Earbuds and the new Sport Open Earbuds. The Ultra model is positioned as the company's flagship open-ear product, while the Sport version offers a lower-cost option aimed at running, fitness and outdoor activities.

Both pairs are designed to let users hear audio while remaining aware of their surroundings. Bose says the earbuds are intended for use during active pursuits as well as everyday listening. Pre-orders begin September 19, and both models are scheduled to go on sale October 1.

Bose Ultra Open Earbuds add upgraded audio features

The second-generation Ultra Open Earbuds use a newly engineered driver that Bose says produces deeper bass and higher volume than the first-generation model. They also support Snapdragon Sound and aptX Adaptive for higher-quality wireless audio.

For calls, Bose includes SpeechClarity technology, which is designed to keep voices clear and natural. Auto Volume can adjust playback as environmental sound changes, helping listeners avoid repeatedly changing the volume manually.

The Ultra model also introduces Cinema Mode. Powered by Bose TrueSpatial technology, the mode is designed to create a broader soundstage while keeping dialogue centered and clear. Bose says it is intended to provide a theater-like experience with any content source.

The earbuds have a refined metallic cap with a beveled finish, along with a redesigned charging case that can stand upright. The case supports wireless charging. Battery life is rated at up to nine hours for the earbuds, while the case provides up to 19.5 additional hours.

Sport Open Earbuds target workouts and outdoor use

The Sport Open Earbuds focus on stability, comfort and durability. Bose says their design is intended to stay in place during movements such as head shakes and cartwheels, while textured physical buttons provide control during activity.

They use custom-designed dynamic drivers and include Auto Volume. The earbuds have an IP54 rating for dust, sweat and splash resistance. Their silicone construction is designed for active use and can be wiped clean when exposed to dirt or grime.

The Sport charging case also stands upright and supports wireless charging. Battery life reaches up to seven hours from the earbuds, with up to 22 additional hours available from the case.

Pricing, connectivity and upcoming features

The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds cost $299, while the Sport Open Earbuds are priced at $199. Both models use Bluetooth 5.4 and support multipoint connections with two devices, along with Google Fast Pair.

Users can customize shortcuts for Spotify Tap and quick access to a phone's voice assistant. Bose also provides a three-band equalizer in its app, plus settings for Auto Volume control.

A future firmware update is expected to add Google Find Hub, Alexa+ and shortcut support for Apple Music. Bose has not specified when that update will be released beyond saying it will arrive after launch.
