Apple’s new Apple TV 4K can connect to four HomePods at once, allowing users to build an all-Apple surround sound system for home theater setups. The speakers can be arranged as front-left, front-right, rear-left, and rear-right channels, expanding the system beyond the two-speaker stereo limit on earlier Apple TV 4K models.
The new Apple TV 4K is available to pre-order and will launch on Friday, November 13. In the United States, it costs $299 and comes in one configuration with 128GB of storage, Wi-Fi 7, and an Ethernet port.
How the four-HomePod setup works
Apple supports a system made from four new HomePod mini 2 speakers, or a combination of full-sized HomePod 2 and HomePod mini 2 speakers. The front and rear speaker pairs must match, but the two pairs can use different HomePod models.
For example, users can place two full-sized HomePod 2 speakers at the front of the room and two HomePod mini 2 speakers behind the seating position. Alternatively, all four speakers can be HomePod mini 2 units.
This gives Apple TV owners a way to create separate front and rear audio channels without adding a traditional AV receiver or speakers from multiple manufacturers. The arrangement also keeps the system within Apple’s HomePod and Apple TV ecosystem.
Computational audio calibrates the room
Apple is using computational audio to adjust the surround sound experience. The company says the Apple TV 4K and four connected HomePods can identify where each speaker is positioned in the room.
The system then automatically calibrates audio timing and volume levels for the space. That calibration is intended to coordinate the speakers without requiring users to manually configure each channel, although the source information does not specify which room sizes or layouts are supported.
Older Apple TV 4K models remain limited
The four-speaker surround sound feature is exclusive to the new Apple TV 4K. Previous Apple TV 4K models continue to support up to two HomePods for stereo sound, so existing owners cannot use the same four-speaker arrangement through a software update based on the information available.
With the new model, Apple is positioning the Apple TV 4K as the central component of a more expansive home theater setup. The combination of four HomePods, automatic positioning, and a single 128GB configuration gives buyers a relatively straightforward path to an Apple-only surround system, although the total cost will depend on the HomePod speakers selected.
